The actions of the last few weeks have been cause for deep prayer and reflection.

I am not political in nature.  I have not swum inside the political stream, getting used to the water and whatever might be in it.  I am just an ordinary citizen.  A deeply concerned citizen.  But ordinary.

And here I am.  With a heavy heart.

I may be like you.  I am busy with work.  Busy with family.  Busy with life.

But I know it’s important to know what’s going on.  I know it’s important to be informed.  I know there are people who need to hear from me or else think there is no one out there who supports them.

So I’ve engaged.  I’ve educated.  I’ve encouraged.

And oh how my heart is heavy and burdened.

Liberals have controlled the sacred Senate Education and Health Committee for many years, harboring any legislation that has had anything to do with life.  This past election changed that.  And while the priority of the General Assembly was not necessarily these issues, there was some great legislation that finally got out of committee.  No doubt you’ve heard about it.

Day after day, The Family Foundation reported on some great victories of some great legislation getting passed out of committee, through the Senate, through the House.  As if the legislation was on a fast track to our pro-family Governor for signature.

But then there were lies.  And more lies.  And jokes.  And news media coverage.  And protests.  And more lies.

As I read the news coverage day after day, what struck me more than anything was that no one was combating those lies.  Where was the truth?  Where was the other side?  Is anyone in this fight?  Or will it just go down as a slaughter?

Many have covered the media bias over the last 30 years.  So it certainly was not a surprise to see such blatant one-sided coverage.  But if there was a mountain of support behind these issues, as the polls and recent elections indicate, surely there was another side?  Where were the leaders in Congress, leaders in business, leaders in the community, leaders in the church?

Truly, it wasn’t just The Family Foundation that was promoting these pieces of legislation?  Truly, the legislation was sound, having been molded and shaped for a decade, going through iteration after iteration, to withstand scrutiny and constitutionality?  Truly, the right to life, liberty and opportunity for all would trump any loss of power or control, any tendency for selfishness, any desire to hide behind an issue instead of standing in the light?

I have a heavy heart.  My heart yearns for those to know Jesus in a very real and personal way.  My heart yearns for the innocent to not be caught up in the bad choices of others.  My heart yearns for people to do what is right, no matter the cost.

We know this will never happen apart from an understanding from the Lord who created us, who knows what is best for us, who desires us to surrender self and our selfish ways, to sacrifice and put others before ourselves, to love and care for one another.

But the principles that The Family Foundation stands for speaks to these issues.  If you are reading this, then surely you’ve decided that these are issues worth fighting for?

So where are you in this?  Do you feel that same angst when you hear the lies of the culture of death?  Do you wonder who is standing up for the defenseless?  Or do you think it’s just a waste of time?  Have you decided that fighting is too hard, not worth the energy, the ostracism, the reputation?

The Family Foundation, and the valuable legislation that speaks on behalf of and seeks to strengthen families, needs our help.  They need voices.  In our homes.  In our neighborhoods.  In our churches.  In our towns and cities.

We took the first step in electing a very strong pro-family House and Senate inVirginia.  But our support cannot end there.  Our congressmen need to hear from us.  We need to be willing to stand up and speak out.  We need to engage our neighbors and our newspapers.  We cannot be the silent majority.
