Human Exploitation

Human exploitation comes in various forms and is often deceitfully portrayed as exciting and innocent fun, but ultimately leads to social and emotional destruction. Marijuana and gambling legalization are recent issues for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Marijuana poses dangers to the smoker’s health as well as risks to those around them. Gambling and sports betting, while presented as entertaining, are addictive, and studies show how they are socially and emotionally damaging and hurt families. The Family Foundation takes a firm stance in fighting against the expansion of practices that exploit people and prevent human flourishing. The government has a legitimate interest in protecting its citizens from abuses and exploitation, but instead, the Virginia state government has chosen to legalize these practices.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

  • Standing against the expansion of marijuana dispensaries in counties/cities | In 2021 the Virginia General Assembly passed the legalization and commercialization of marijuana. The law gives each county/city the option to opt-out of having marijuana dispensaries in their locality via a referendum. We are part of the Virginia Allies Evaluating Drug Legislation coalition that is working to stop the legalization and commercialization of marijuana and other dangerous drugs in the Commonwealth.

  • Fighting against casino referendums in Virginia counties/cities | In 2020 the General Assembly passed legislation that allows for casino operation in certain economically-distressed localities. We have linked arms with various groups around the state and in these areas to oppose casino referendums.

  • Educating & Mobilizing Virginians | Casino referendums and marijuana commercialization in localities are now in the hands of the people. It is up to you to vote against the building of casinos and marijuana dispensaries in your county or city.
