Action Alert: Federal Legislation Disrespects Marriage

The U.S. Senate may vote on the motion-to-proceed (i.e., cloture vote) on the misnamed “Respect for Marriage Act" as early as tomorrow or Wednesday, which would ultimately ensure the bill becomes law since there are enough Senate Republicans who will vote in favor of the bill itself.

Your help is needed to convince Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner to REJECT H.R. 8404, the misnamed “Respect for Marriage Act,” a bill that would essentially codify same-sex marriage in federal law and threaten religious freedom.   Please call and email Senators Kaine and Warner now and urge them to OPPOSE this legislation.

If passed in the Senate, H.R. 8404 will:

  • Recognize in federal law ANY marriage allowed in a state—including polygamy.

  • Threaten religious individuals and organizations with harassing and costly lawsuits.

  • Place licensed ministers who perform marriage ceremonies at risk of lawsuits.

  • Open the door for the federal government to force everyone, including religious organizations, to affirm same-sex marriage, polygamy, and more.

The U.S. Supreme Court in 2015 issued a lawless 5-4 opinion that invented a “right” to same-sex marriage, completely redefining this institution established by God and forcing so-called same-sex marriage on all 50 states.  As we witnessed with Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court could conceivably overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, returning the issue of marriage back to the states – just as it did with the issue of abortion.

However, if H.R. 8404 is passed it would prevent states from debating the issue, and force everyone in the nation to adhere to the government’s definition of marriage.  The truth is the Respect for Marriage Act effectively does little to change the status of same-sex marriage, but it is a direct attack on religious freedom and churches.

Please act now on this critically important issue!
