Major Fracturing in The Supposed “Medical Consensus” on Gender Affirming Care

A major fracturing in the supposed “medical consensus” surrounding so-called gender affirming care in the United States appears to be happening.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a major medical association representing over 90 percent of plastic surgeons in the U.S. and Canada, has reportedly stated that it “has not endorsed any organization’s practice recommendations for the treatment of adolescents with gender dysphoria.” They also questioned the efficacy of chest and genital surgeries and consider evidence for such practices to be “low quality/low certainty,” meaning that the real impact of such interventions is not being reported in studies.

Some European countries have already acknowledged the harm that hormones, puberty blockers and surgical procedures can have on otherwise healthy physical bodies of young kids.

  • Teens under 18 cannot undergo a double mastectomy in Belgium, Finland, Germany, Luxemburg, Sweden, the U.K., and three Canadian provinces, except in “rare cases,” after age 16 with parental consent.

  • In Sweden, hospitals halted the use of puberty blockers and are now recommending psychotherapy for gender dysphoria instead.

  • In Great Britain, the conservative-leaning Tory government banned puberty blockers, a move that was endorsed by the left-leaning Labour government.

But sadly, some of our most respected and appreciated children’s hospitals here in Virginia, including the Richmond Children’s Hospital of VCU, are moving full steam ahead with pharmaceutical and surgical experimentation on children.  Below is a list of Richmond Children’s Hospital’s treatment options:

In addition to Richmond Children’s Hospital, Dr. Chirstine Burt Solorzano at UVA Children’s Hospital admitted in a YouTube video to performing double-mastectomies on minors and said a nine-year-old may not fully understand the risks, but a parent can give consent on their behalf to begin hormone “treatment.”

Hope remains however, as 23 states have taken steps to either prohibit transgender treatments and surgeries for minors or impose significant restrictions. And just this month, an Ohio judge upheld the state’s law prohibiting gender reassignment treatments and surgeries for minors.

In Virginia, for the past three years, legislation called Help Not Harm has been introduced that would protect children from being used as experimental specimens by misguided medical practitioners, but each year it has been stopped by the Democrat-led majority in the Senate.

Given all that is occurring in this moment, and the growing body of evidence showing that so-called “gender-affirming care” causes real and lasting damage, we hope to one day add Virginia to the list of states prohibiting minors from medical experimentation.
