Gov. Northam Bans All Elective Surgeries, Exempts Abortions

Today, Governor Northam signed another Public Health Emergency Order, in response to the Coronavirus outbreak, directing “all hospitals to stop performing elective surgeries or procedures,” but immediately clarified that the Order does NOT apply to “the full suite of family planning services and procedures” – i.e. Abortions. Read the Governor’s full Press Release here.

Governor Northam is putting the profits of the $1 billion abortion industry ahead of the health, safety, and well-being of all Virginians.  His decision to allow abortions to continue when other elective procedures have been suspended is anti-health, anti-life, and downright irresponsible.

Even as the state prepares for the creation of additional bed capacity and make-shift hospitals in this pandemic crisis, the Governor says will only get worse, he’s letting hospitals continue to perform abortions.

Beyond allowing abortion to distract from COVID-19 triage in traditional hospitals, Northam’s order makes certain the entire abortion industry, including all stand-alone centers, is able to continue turning a profit, unlike every other health facility that likely just furloughed their employees and shut their doors. By prohibiting “all inpatient and outpatient surgical hospitals licensed under 12 VAC 5-410,” Governor Northam specifically excluded the adjacent regulatory chapter: 12 VAC 5-412 that addresses abortion facilities.

If the election money given to Governor Northam and his new blue majority from the abortion industry weren’t blinding, a simple glance at the health and safety inspection reports conducted by the Department of Health would reveal that the very last place a woman should be to avoid COVID-19 is an abortion facility. Center after center has been cited for failing to sterilize its equipment, having bodily fluid stains on the tables and more. Many of these inspection reports read like a COVID-19 breading ground. While Virginians know by now Governor Northam does not value the unborn child’s life, one would think all the extreme measures put in place to limit life lost to COVID-19 would have him shut down these centers.  One thing has become clear over and over again with this Governor: Abortions and the abortion industry will always take precedence, no matter the circumstances.
