Will VA follow other states—even legalizing cocaine?

Update: Gov. Northam says “It’s time to legalize marijuana in Virginia.” While most eyes were focused on the nail-biting presidential race, there were other significant issues being decided on Election Day that will drastically impact our nation—including the national trend to legalize illicit drugs.

According to The Associated Press, “a nationwide push to relax drug laws took a significant step forward … as more states legalized marijuana for adults and voters made Oregon the first state to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of street drugs such as cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine.” Voters in the District of Columbia also decided to decriminalize pyschedelic mushrooms. Why does this disturbing trend matter to Virginia voters? Because our state is poised to tumble down the very same slippery slope: The General Assembly has already taken steps to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana possession and, as it now flirts with legalizing recreational marijuana, Virginians need to recognize that’s where Oregon started before “progressing” from there to legalizing even the most addictive and dangerous drugs. How can you help? Be prepared to answer questions from friends and neighbors about why legalizing marijuana is a terrible idea for our children and our neighborhoods.
