What’s that, Pelosi for President?
Shortly after President Trump was released from his short stay at Walter Reed National Medical Center due to his COVID-19 diagnosis, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared that the President was in “an altered state” due to the use of the steroid dexamethasone for his coronavirus treatment and that action regarding the 25th Amendment would be discussed. The following day, Pelosi announced legislation to create a Commission on Presidential Capacity to Discharge the Powers and Duties of Office Act, which would allow Congress to remove a president from office using the U.S. Constitution’s 25th Amendment.
Passed in 1965 and ratified in 1967, the 25th Amendment addresses what happens if the President or Vice President dies, resigns, or becomes disabled or incapacitated. Section 4 of the 25th Amendment stipulates that the President can be removed from office if the Vice President and a majority of his cabinet consider him unable to carry out his duties. This would also require a 2/3 vote by both the House and the Senate. Section 4 also states that if the Vice President and a majority of a body established by law for such purpose declare in writing that the President is disabled and unable to do his job, the Vice President immediately becomes the acting president.
So, what does Pelosi hope to gain by doing this?
Even though Pelosi insisted that this legislation was meant to apply to future presidents rather than to President Trump, it can’t possibly be a coincidence that she decided to take these steps so soon after Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis. Furthermore, during her press conference announcing the commission, Pelosi reiterated that the President’s recent health issues emphasize the need for such a process.
Say her goal really is to remove Trump from office – this wouldn’t be that much of a stretch considering the number of times Congressional Democrats have already gone after Trump. They started with the now proven Russia hoax, then moved onto the fake impeachment, so why not invoke the 25th Amendment? But Pelosi would still need to convince Senate Republicans to go along with this, and Vice President Pence would have to sign the declaration, and that is NEVER going to happen.
BUT, even if she were to succeed, and President Trump were declared unfit to hold office, Vice President Pence would become President. With a vice presidential vacancy, President Pence would nominate a vice president who would take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress. There’s no question that Pence would nominate a conservative to the vice presidency.
Could it be that Pelosi and her left-wing cohorts would actually use the 25th Amendment to remove Biden so that we end up with a Harris White House – and a likely Pelosi Vice President? Here’s why such an unlikely proposition may not be too far-fetched. It appears to even the most casual observer that, well, Biden’s cognitive faculties are in definite decline. So, it wouldn’t be too far fetched to think that Pelosi and the Democrats are planning to oust Biden by using the 25th Amendment, have Harris become President, and who knows, maybe Pelosi would be the vice presidential nominee? Never say never, my friends. Stranger things have certainly happened in the world of politics, and after all, this is 2020.
