Meet Catherine Hickam!

We are excited to introduce our third summer intern! On Saturday mornings this summer, we will introduce a new Family Foundation or Family Foundation Action intern by releasing a bio written by one of their classmates. Be on the lookout for new blogs and social media posts to catch a glimpse of the great work they are doing!

Today, we are happy to introduce Catherine Hickam!

Originally from Northern California and now settled in Columbia, Missouri, Catherine brings a unique blend of experiences and passions to her studies at Patrick Henry College, where she majors in government with a Political Theory emphasis. Catherine has many early memories of political involvement, and vividly remembers her mother passionately defending political signs in her yard, leaving a lasting impression on young Catherine.

Beyond academics, Catherine finds joy in playing the violin and horseback riding. She is an accomplished violinist and currently contributes to the Patrick Henry College Orchestra, where she has served in a variety of leadership roles, such as assistant concertmaster of the orchestra.

A pivotal moment in Catherine's Christian walk occurred within the walls of the Missouri State Capitol. As part of TeenPact, a Christian government leadership school, she found herself standing in the rotunda, singing "Amazing Grace." In that transformative instant, she felt the presence of the Holy Spirit, deepening her understanding of faith and its role in government.

Leadership and involvement come naturally to Catherine. At Patrick Henry College, she actively participates in the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, showcases her violin skills in the Orchestra, and contributes as a research editor for Arche, PHC's campus journal for the Political Theory major. Notably, Catherine has also made her mark beyond campus, serving as a Regional Field Coordinator for the Eric Schmitt for Senate Campaign in 2022. Serving in this position, Catherine was able to interact with voters across the political spectrum, encouraging her to continue fighting for what is right. These experiences have fostered her growth and solidified her dedication to making a positive impact in her field of study.

Looking ahead, Catherine aspires to pursue graduate school or law school, with a particular interest in working alongside conservative think tanks. She aims to combine her faith and reason to connect with others and share the compelling intersection between the two realms.

Deeply rooted in her faith, Catherine draws solace and guidance from Romans 8:37-39. She embraces the truth that through Christ's love, she is more than a conqueror, unfazed by any challenge or obstacle that may come her way. Catherine is committed to staying true to her values, understanding the importance of being a Christian in government and family law.

Catherine brings a unique perspective to our team. Her ability to connect with others, understanding that Christ calls us to serve the least of these, allows her to effectively advocate for those in need. Catherine's dedication to maintaining the delicate balance between church and state, while celebrating the inherent dignity of humanity, reflects her understanding that we are all made in the image of God.
